Probably just needs to get established. You keep moving it.

In Cal. I would have left it in the ground and tried to determine if it needed more water, less water, some fertilizer or perhaps got too much fert.

It will need some time in the pot to re-establish. Then should do fine for you.

Kumquats can alternate bear, so when it was in the ground, probably nothing was wrong. Doubtful you had "bad soil", just needing to be fertilized, and watering needed to be adjusted properly (not too much, not too little). The potting medium you're using is most likely much too dense, retaining too much water, and, if allowed to dry out, becoming hydrophobic (won't absorb water, just runs through the container). So, watch for that. And, it may take a year or so for your poor tree to recover from all the transplant shock, so give it some time if you plan to keep it in a container. Water appropriately, fertilize frequently, but be sure to, on occasion, flush out the container to remove built up salts (to prevent burning).

Thanks for the replies. Well when it was in the ground, it was doing nothing. No new growth, the leaves were turning yellow, even though I fertlized, and I did not notice any new growth whatsoever. When I planted it in the big pot and fertilzed it, within a couple of weeks there was signs of new growth already.

The tree flowered really well, but what would cause the little 'fruit' to turn brown and die?

So how often should I water it? I've been watering it about 2-3 times per week.
