i see a lot of earwigs this year and somehow think they are the culprit.

If you have earwigs where you live, that is definitely the culprit. I hate those little buggers; but fortunately we don't have them where I grow my Meyers. The good news is that the damage is not like a disease...kill the earwigs and the problem is solved.

Use a new paper and roll it up dampening it up..Those things will hide inside that roll by the dozens and you can just toss them in the a.m
That is exactly I get from earwigs too along with grasshoppers.. I hate these bugs!

thank you for the tip mike. yup, i remember the olden days when we did but some old straw in a clay pot, hung them upside down and the next day it would be full with those buggers. i will hang some near the trees again and see if it works like the olden days in germany.

You might go out after dark or very early in the morning and check your tree with a good flashlight. Your culprit may have already left if it was a swallowtail butterfly larva. I had some roses that were being eaten alive one year. There were no pests visible during the day but at night I found lots of adult june bug beetles eating them.

I get the beetles, earwigs, and grasshopper/katydids.

I knock them to the ground with a stick or small aquarium net and the dog eats them! LOL!

Are your citrus outdoors? I have the same problem with mine. I know for a certainty that grasshoppers are the culprits. They (jump/fly) on the tree and feast for a few minutes, then leave. I have seen them munching. I have picked a few off but happily, I have mockingbirds in my yard helping control them.
