Citrus fruit drop

I bought my house which came with about 7 citrus trees in January of this year. They had been severely and not professionally cut back to make the house show better. I had a lot of fruit on the trees when I moved in in February. I installed a new irrigation system & fertilized according to schedule ( Valentines Day and Memorial Day, to date, Labor Day is coming up). I left in late May; saw lots of flowering going on in the Spring and now I'm back for a visit and have almost no fruit and lots of little black, hard, dead fruits on the ground around one tree and no evidence of fruit on tangerine and tangelo. What am I doing wrong? Could the severe pruning in December have caused this?
