Questions about birds as first Meyer lemon ripens

I've been following along on the citrus forum for a long time trying to learn the best methods for caring for my citrus trees.

I'm feeling good because my Meyer Lemon has been working since last fall on its first fruit, it made it through the winter, and it's finally just about ripe. Sadly, the birds got to it a few weeks ago and pecked holes through the rind. You can see the damage in this picture.

I'm wondering what your thoughts are on eating the lemon at this point. Should I just toss it and move on? It seems like in its current shape it would be the ideal incubator for bacteria from those pesky bird beaks.

Also, I have a new crop that set this spring. They have helped to ease the despair of losing my first fruit. Are there any effective strategies for keeping the birds away?
