I'm not into Kumquats but I just wanted to tell you that it's pretty cool that you did this experiment and then shared your results.

Cold hardy field test on kumquats and other citrus. Note that meiwa and nagami were grafted to sour orange and not to poncirus trifoliata or one of its hybrids.

Note in the link in my original entry shows the the sour orange and meiwa are not compatible.

Most of the kumquat hybrids were on their own roots. This include the Nippon orangequat which scored at the top. I have no idea what an orangequat taste like as I never was able to find one.

what exactly do you mean when you say ``Note that meiwa and nagami were grafted to sour orange `` how is it done to graft 2 trees together? i always though grafting was when you cut a branch add rooting gell and plant it to grow its own roots?

The sour orange tree is grown from seed . After the tree is 2 to 3 years old it is cut off and a twig from the meiwa kumquat is cut from the tree and connected to the topless sour orange tree.

What you described is rooting a cutting from a tree. It is still on it own roots

The pictures available on the link I provide represent sites on grafting. Click on one of them and it should enlarge and provide access to the site. This is to much for me to explain as I have never grafted.

I see you live in Canada, but I don't know your weather as to zone an AHS rating. With that information you could ask other here what might be best. Some trees do better than others.

thanks alot its very intresting. personally though i didnt want to try this its just when i see something that i dont know i want to learn about it. im avery curious indevidual and u never know when the information may be usefull to yourself or to help someone else. ill check out that link though i didnt notice it the first time i read your reply, thanks again.
