The rise of the Meyer

Did you know that the Meyer lemon is currently selling in NY markets at more than $5 per pound; in Canada at $6; and in Europe for more. FYI a pound of commercial Meyers is 3 lemons.

The demand is increasing so fast that California... until now the biggest producer in the world, is importing Meyers from New Zealand just to meet the local demand.

Today I sold ONE of these trees to a new restaurant in Guatemala which will use Meyers for its signature dishes... the price?? $500!! Plus transport and the arborist fees.

I think I seen an ad for meyers being 50 cents a piece. Then again, we are a bit behind here somtimes

I saw them for sale here in western N.Y. stores over the late winter and early spring. $5 for 6 or 7 small lemons but I love meyers so I bought bag after bag, after bag! I would still buy them if they were available but I have not found them since this past spring.

I picked the wrong business to go into! I picked the antiquarian book trade when it should have been growing Meyer lemons. Oh well. Live and learn.

Moving the tree is the work of the certified arborist they have hired. The tree is just under two years; so ground to ground same day it should be okay; the distance is only about 40 miles.

My experience with moving trees is that once they get to 3 years, the odds of surviving a move are not good for Meyers.
