Well, we don't know where you live, and we don't have a photo of the insect, so, unless someone here has ESP, I doubt you're going to get an ID :-) Please let us know where you live, and post a clear, close photo of the insect in question, and we'll attempt to ID it for you. You can also post a photo of the insect on What's That Bug, http://www.whatsthatbug.com/ to see if it can be ID'ed there.

You can also post a picture of any plant problem in the Garden Clinic Forum, right here in GardenWeb. But a photo will be important....."strange, wasp-like creature " isn't very helpful.

If looks like a horntail "wasp ", to me. Not a true wasp but a type of sawfly. Are your trees in good health?
