This tree looks to be slip grafted, and all the growth is above the graft line, which runs as a diagonal. I think you're fine. You'll certainly know if the rootstock is putting out branches, as it will produce trifoliate leaves.

Thanks for the feedback. As far as I can tell, the growth isn't tri-flolate above the graft line.

But, should the lowest V-branch be taken off? Isn't the graft line the diagonal above that?

It appears to be the diagonal BESIDE that and the branch is from the Scion side, not the rootstock.

Oh, I see now--the diagonal. And, yes, it does seem to be from the non-root stock side. It didn't have thorns. My last one had huge thorns on the root stock (stalk?).

What Greg said (slip graft is that diagonal line you see - it's a very nice graft btw.) Thorns or no thorns will not always indicate rootstock growth versus scion growth, so don't go by that. Go by the leaves. If it's rootstock, you'll know because it will be "leaves of three", there will be NO doubt.

Never heard of 'slip grafting' - can someone explain the technique?

Looking at that I figured it was a whip graft. I tried my first a month ago and it took, much to my surprise!

As is said by all above, that graft is perfectly done, nothing to complaint there.
