Unless there is a strong reason to container grow these I would be inclined to plant them in ground. bottomless pot on ground, raised bed, simple hill. As the tree grows you just lift the ring and put down a larger ring and fill. As far as I can see a meiwa kumquat is in need to this collection.

Stve, thanks for the quick response, i plant in pots due to poor soil. the soil here is extremely rocky and doesnt drain very well, also im limited on room and my other lame trees that produce nothing( i.e: palms) have roots going everywhere. i am currentlyin the process of building bottomless wood pots that i can place around my yard and stick trees in them. thanks for the insight, a kumquat has been on my radar for a minute now i think ill go pick up a couple of them and see how it does. thanks.

Joe, I live in Vista. Where are you in San Diego county? We grow citrus very successfully, in DG (my soil, decomposed granite, rocky, and Caliche, which is like cement when dry). The vast majority of my citrus (about 60) are in ground and doing just fine. The few I have in pots are just for fun on my various patios. You're missing mandarins and our wonderful Bearrs lime. If you need help with putting them in the ground, just ask.

I would like to point out that the absolute worse thing you can do to a citrus tree is to plant it in a container (COFFIN). You only put it in a container if it must be moved or if it is to be grown over concrete or similar slab.

Well, I don't know if I would go so far as to say the worst thing to happen to a citrus tree is a container :-) We have an awful lot of container citrus folks on this list who have gorgeous citrus trees, and they've been planting citrus in containers in China, Japan and Italy for thousands of years. My container citrus look as good as my in-ground citrus. But, certainly, for those of us who have the luxury of living in a climate that affords in-ground citrus, it is certainly something to consider. You would be amazed at how well all plants will grow if you simply start topping your soil with composted manure. Like Mother Nature does.
