Non-acidic oranges and mandarins?

Posted by ashleysf 9 SF SouthBay (My Page) on

I would love to gift some orange and mandarin trees to a family member for the holidays who loves oranges and mandarins but cannot eat too many of them because of severe Acid Reflux issues. I was looking for "low acid" varieties that probably he could eat in moderation. They have a big yard, so I assume that the trees would be in-ground in a sunny spot. Any help choosing low acid variety Oranges and Mandarins would be most appreciated. TIA.

Floridata list 'Ponkan', as a larger, low-acid type; manadarin.

Here is a link that might be useful: Low Acid Citrus

Thank you tsmith. I had never heard of the Ponkan variety before - I will try to find more information on it and look for local sources within California. On another forum, I was told about the Persian Sweet Lime and the "Vainiglia Sanguigno" Orange (also spelled as Vaniglia by some) as sweet and non-acid citrus. Thanks a lot. I have 3 leads now to follow.
