 o
Hubby's hobby, my responsibility?

Hello all!

Hubby's hobby took a turn for the obsessive. We now
have a greenhouse full of out-of-control citrus. They
are not gigantic, but very productive. I tried not to
nose into hubby's project, so I did nothing in terms
of pruning, potting, etc.

Now that winter approaches and they are all in the
greenhouse, it is obvious they are just mangled plants
with many branches going in every direction. He meant
well.

Could anyone steer me in the direction of assistance?
I hate to just start whacking off branches, and am in
need of direction. They are healthy and blooming and
all is well otherwise, but out of control.

Many thanks!
Karen Marie

Karen Marie: I prune mine right after harvest. But that may not work for everything. Some bloom and fruit year around. So I'd just cut off the long limbs that are out of bounds. Try to prune to a lateral heading in the best direction. If there are places too thick, thin those out. Take out crossing or dead branches.

Whatever you do will be better than nothing. They'll grow back even if what you do is wrong.

Since the citrus are HIS hobby, I sure as heck wouldn't do anything without his expressed permission. Your 'out of control' may not be at all, in terms of natural growth and development.

Well, of course I would not just start cutting hubby's
trees, LOL. Yes, I have his permission.

The trees are definitely out of control. They have never
been pruned, have twisted branches, mangled branches, hardly conducive to fruit production.

Fruitnut, I took your advice and did some trimming. They
look so much stronger and better able to hold fruit, thank
you! I was worried about causing the trees harm.

wuvie: Good for you. So many beginners can't get started for fear of permanent damage. But those fears are greatly overblown. We all learn by experience. Only the smart ones like you ask advice first.
