My potted meyer lemon lost quite a few leaves, too, but doesn't sound like yours does.

A couple winters ago it was really dropping a lot of leaves and I thought it was dying but some research told me that it was stressed: I had it in a south facing window that got quite warm and bright in the daytime and so the leaves would heat up but the roots stayed cooler and couldn't 'keep up' with the leaves, hence the stress and leaves dropping. Putting it in a more indirect light saved the day. Don't know if this would be an answer for your tree but I thought I'd throw it out there, fwiw.

Just because your tree has dropped it's leaves does not mean it's dying...It all depends on the environment you give that determines whether you will have a full set of leaves or none at all after winter...

Are the branches dead and have you taken a look at the roots to see if they are healthy?
This will tell you a lot and determine your actions...

For years it did well right?
What is different this time around other than letting it dry out too much?

That looks like what happened to my meyer lemon when it was in the hot window but the roots were too cold. Other than that, not sure what to tell you. It is scary to see the leaves falling one after the other and the bare branches, though. This past spring I repotted mine with some new compost-y soil and that really rejuvenated it, too. It looks better than ever this year.
