Etoile Violet and Gravety Beauty have been hardy here in Z:4. Don't know about the others.

I grow both Etoile Violette and Blue Angel and they are both hardy for me. I think I actually may be in zone 4, not 5.

Any of the large flowered hybrids and the viticellas should be hardy to zone 4. Texensis cultivars are considered borderline 4/5. It is only when you are dealing with some of the species - like monatanas or armandii - do you come into cold hardiness issues with lower zones.

I have no problem with type III's coming through my sometimes brutal zone 3 winters and I'm sure my newly acquired 'Ashva' will prove no different. When planting, I place about 4 inches of stem below ground level. I have only once experienced winterkill, that when we received -40 F without any snowcover ... thankfully, a good blanket of snow is rather reliable here.

For years, I've also grown 'Princess Diana' and 'Duchess of Albany' with no problem whatsoever.

I have had Ashva since 2009. I live in Sw Ontario in Zone 5a out in the country where it is very windy. It is planted in a raised planter box at the end of a farm building.It survived the winter of 2009/10 and bloomed quite nicely for me. I will see if it makes it this winter.
