I have a nice clematis that covers my mailbox each year. Can i dig it up and split it? Does it do well in shade?

More information is needed to answer your questions. Do you know the variety? What zone are you in? Do you have a photo you can post?

I'd suggest you read through this relatively recent thread on the same subject. It can be done but it's risky and not a recommended method of propagation.
