Planting Clematis - Questions

rainierdog

Last fall I ordered 3 specialty clematis. I didn't get them planted out early enough, so they've been overwintering inside. I had set them, in their original containers, at the base of a lemon tree in a large pot. Now they've sent up greens that are engulfing the lemon tree. When I plant them, can I cut them back - and will the growth come back? Or do I need to detangle them to preserve the growth that's there now?

Also, how well do clematis transplant?

TIA!
