Rooted clematis cuttings without buds and leaves

During last september I had two clematis cuttings without root with two leaves each, one had a bud wich flowered. One lost its foliage soon and the other lost it in january. They're in the same pot in a greenhouse. Now I thought this cuttings have rotten but while I was picking them out I noticed that both rooted. Is there a choice they develop new buds or else from the roots or should I consider them as lost. Consider the stem of the first is soft and looks rotted, the stem of the second is dry and the buds look dead and dry too.
