When do you know early flower-er is not returning?

I had 2 clematis that did poorly and disappeared last summer. One was Vino, which was in a poor drainage spot. The other was a mature HF Young that I planted but it seemed to get clematis wilt or generally, die.

If they are showing no signs of emerging whatsoever by this point, should I assume they are dead?

No, depending on the weather I would not yet give up on any clematis that is not showing growth at this early time of the year.

I've had Clematis die back entirely one summer, stay disappeared the next year but come back with a vengeance the following year. Strange but true.

Redsox - Hi Neighbor, don't give up!

Bogart - I had that same thing happen to me with a Florida sieboldii. I kept seeing the most unusual bloom from a distance and wondered what it was I'd forgotten I planted. Upon closer inspection, it was a resurrected clemmie! Had been given up for dead half of one year; all of the next. What a great surprize and gorgeous blooms. I remember reading an old clematis book about that being fairly common.
