One gallon needs planting: ok to bury foliage?

I bought "General Sikorski" as a small plant last spring and put it in a one gallon so it could develop good roots. I think it's time to plant it but I'm concerned that when I follow the recommendation to plant it a few inches deeper I will be burying ALOT of foliage. Do you see any problem with this? Should I remove the foliage that will be below ground?

Yes, best to remove the foliage. It will rot off if left in place but I like to avoid any situations that encourage fungal issues close to the plants :-) Certainly won't hurt to remove any foliage that may be buried and it might prevent any difficulties down the road.
