growing clematis up through trees

Is this a good idea ? I have a birch tree that is in one of my full sun beds and it is an "airy" tree that provides dappled sunlight to surrounding plants. I would like to plant a clematis at it's base and allow it to grow up the trunk and through the branches, but I don't want the tree to be traumatized. Does anyone use other plants/trees to grow their clematis on, and if so, do you choose ones that are about 6-10 ft so they are not overpowering ? Any suggested varieties ? Any pics to share ?? I am in zone 6. There are already 2 clematis nearby on an obelisk (one dark purple and one lavender) and the dark purple one keeps "reaching over" from the top of the obelisk to grab the birch tree branches, so I have to prune that one to stay confined to the obelisk. I would like something in the raspberry/hot pink color family so you can see the blooms stand out among the leaves of the tree.
