clematis

I bought some clematis starts in a bag at Costco yesterday. I was going to put them in the ground but they are so tiny. About the size of my thumb with a little start no bigger then a broken piece of spagetti. I just can't imagine them surving the ground right now. Can I put them in a raised container, let them grow for bit and transplant them later? Also do slugs like them little starts? Thanks
