inherited clematis: pruning conundrum

We have several clematis, the species of which we do not know. They came with the property. I have some awareness of when to prune/not to prune (growth on old wood/ growth encouraged by pruning) and I don't know where to begin.

Are there any rules of thumb I can use as guidelines? Some 'old wood' I am itching to remove but don't want to ruin a healthy plant doing its thing. I see new growth where I thought there would be none, and I am completely confused. Any pointers would be most appreciated.
