Liquid dish soap and water. Maybe a teaspoon of soap to a standard squirt bottle. Try to use one that is phosphate free if spraying near a pond or natural water feature. Phosphates feed algae.

I just saw a different type of recipe on Tinker's Gardens web site.

1 quart of water
1/2 cup alcohol (I'm assuming they mean rubbing alcohol)
Put in spray bottle and shake well.
It says it works for spider mites, mealy bugs, gnats and aphids. Spray every 4 days until bugs are under control.

There is a Neem based insecticide, fungicide, and miticide that does well on aphids for me.

That said, there are people who don't trust anything that has colorful packaging :)

I love to buy live ladybugs off internet. You can get around 1500 live ones for around 15.00. You just spray the vine around dusk, and release the lady Bugs. This is when they like to feed. They will gorge themselves then lay eggs. When the Larva hatch they will eat tons of aphids.I saw one larva on my Stargazer eat every aphid within one day.
