question of pruning new Dr. Ruppel

HI

I just bought and planted Dr. Ruppel that i bought at a local nursery. She was tightly twisted around the small trellis that came with it, so much so that i didn't realize how big she actually was!

I unwound her, and started her up a trellis. But now I am wondering if I need to cut her back a bit already. I noticed dark stems from the bottom 12 inches up or so, (old growth) and then new growth another 12 inches beyond that! YEP she is two feet tall after all that untangling, and obviously NOT a first year clem. SO do i cut her back now as is recommend the first year to get her root system going, which is actually i'm thinking her 2nd year.. or just let her be and prune her hard next spring? She isn't spindly, but the 2 years worth of growth has me a bit concerned..

thanks

Kari
