Clematis climbing wrong thing, help!

Last year my clematis all got continually "pruned" by bunnies, so i put up a 2 foot fence around them - one surrounding a lamp post, the other surrounding a large trellis against the house. I just returned from vacation to find the clematis clinging to the fencing. Now they have nowhere to go since it is only 2' tall and they can't reach the lamp post. How much harm will it do to cut the leaves that are wrapped around the fencing? Any other suggestions?

No harm, your Clematis will benefit from pruning. If it is a well established plant, you can fertilize it right after pruning. Do not cut the leaves, cut the vines. You will get a bushier plant.
