type of clematis

Hi,
I love looking at clematis but don't know very much about them. I purchased and planted one last year and don't know the variety I got. I have it climbing my front porch. It flowered in late spring/summer and is purple in color. I left it alone all winter and see that the old wood has new buds on it. My question is, at the base of the plant I see three new shoots coming up, is that part of the same plant or did it seed and create a new plant? i don't know if it should be removed or if it will add itself to the old growth or what? Do clematis grow new wood stems every year in addition to blooming on old growth? Thanks
