First Clematis to Bloom Here this Year

And the winner for me since I can't get the atragenes to live long in my climate is clematis fremontii that was purchased last spring from Brushwood Nursery. Only one bloom but an early one at that.

In the same container is clematis socialis which already has 5 to 6 buds forming and appears to like its abode since it has sent runners out in several directions from where it was planted last year.

    Oh - how precious!

I don't have any early blooming species clems, but a few large flowering are racing to the finish. I have big fat flowers buds on Asao, Guernsey Cream and Ruby Glow. GC was the winner last year. Maybe in a week...

Your Clematis Socialis looks very healthy. Where did you buy it?

I've lost several atragenes this year - not sure why.

Hi Katie. The plant was a gift and was not purchased. It has spread itself out in the pot with the fremontii and two clematis scottis that are duds for me. I believe they sell socialis at Woodlanders but they won't sell interstate. I never have quite figured what the differnce is between selling something in person and allowing the person to transport it out of the state versus just allowing it to be mail ordered and shipped out of state. One of those quirky state laws I guess.

Isn't it great to see the clematis blooming. My first one opened yesterday and another one today!!! I will try to post photos. Some of the clematis are really full of buds!
    Thanks for posting your photos!

Good to see another NC resident on this forum Gayle. The weather certainly has brought things up early this year. Look forward to seeing your pictures.

Oh wow, how nice to see flowers so early. We just got rid of most of our snow this week and now they're calling for another storm 15 - 25cm of the white stuff. I was out cleaning up some of the gardens yesterday, but I guess the rest will have to wait another while.

    Miguel, your fremontii is gorgeous.
I've had no luck with fremontii seedlings.
Can't wait until your socialis buds open, it certainly looks healthy, fantastic for you.

Snowing here, expecting over a foot by tomorrow morning grrrrrrrr.

Hey Helen. The flower has opened up more now and is even nicer looking. I can't wait for the socialis flowers to open this year as well.

I have had tons of seedlings germinating lately--Floris V, Blue Boy, texensis, addisonii, integrifolia alba, Tapestry, Purple Haze, and others. I am running out of room for the pots. I actually planted out one of my Hanajima and pink clematis stans seedlings today in a large pot with some herbs. I figure it will take a while until the clematis get larege and the herbs will be long gone by then.

Here is the fremontii bloom today. Also above it in the same picture you can see another bud starting to form.

Here is an overview of that pot that contains the fremontii, socialis, and two hirsutissimas that have not done much for me and I am ready to toss out. The socialis looks like a scrambler because it has moved around quite a bit in its pot and has 11-12 buds on it right now on its many branches.

Here is the pot where I planted what is supposed to be a pink clematis stans and a seedling of Hanajima, along with some basil, fennel, dill, and nasturtiums that I stared all from seed.

Things are really popping here within the last few weeks. My Tie Dye is now as tall as I am and others in that same bed are coming along nicely as well.

Here is another area where some are further along.
    {{gwi:583261}}

In that bed is another fremontii but it has yet to emerge. The ochroleuca that I thought I had lost is up as well and has a fuzzy little bud forming. My picture was taken with my older camera so it came out a bit too fuzzy for me to consider posting.

Miguel, can't wait to see the ochroleuca bud open, I have a couple of seedlings but doubt they will be flowering this season.
I really hope your hirsutissimas flower for you this year, the pics I have seen look gorgeous.
I don't seem to have much success with those either, I think all my seedlings from last year croaked.
What sort of nasturtiums are they?
I have a couple of Tropaeolum tricolor babies I started from seed, no idea how I am supposed to care for them but it is fun.

Helen to whet your appetite here are two pictures of ochroleuca I had back in 2004. It and Andante both failed to return the next year and have never returned. I think something must have gotten them over the winter.
