When I first planted my Crystal Fountain; first of all it came in the mail with the stem bent and broken, when I called the place I bought it from they said to do just that, cut it off "it'll be just fine". So, I did. The next year my clemmy took off. It is the best grower and bloomer I have today!

I don't know if a band aid would work but with Clematis I've never try. I cut mine back over and over so it would be pointless for me to baby a stem with a band aid.
