Please tell me I did the right thing lol

I have an Earnest Markham that I planted last spring (I think it was May). Hence, it was just a one stem wonder last year because it was so small.

This year I went to check on it, and it started growing from that one stem, so far so good, but, I noticed that right near ground level that one stem was broken. So, I chopped the one stem down near ground level below the break. Have I killed it?

I will keep watering and fertilizing like normal, but I wonder just how far down you can prune before doing serious damage.

It was planted deeper by 3 to 4 inches last year too :)
