Will clematis cuttings root

I know almost nothing about clematis and just quickly looked through the FAQ's on this forum. I don't even remember planting the one that is in my garden (purple one). I've never pruned it and a long woody stem with several areas of new growth broke off. I cut the stem into multiple pieces, each with an area of new growth and put them in water. Is it possible to root these pieces? If so should I just cut off the new growth and try and root that or keep it attached to the woody stem or is rooting them futile and I should just toss them in the compost pile? Someone gave me the other clematis and I'd like to know if that would do well in my zone, 7a? It's in a pot but I would like to plant it in the yard. What kind of light does it need? I would also love to find out the names of the ones I have. Someone gave me the name of the blue & white one but of course I've already forgotten it.
TIA,
Karyn

Check out this link for information on growing clematis from cuttings: clematis from cuttings. The top picture looks like Florida Sieboldii. There are so many that look like the bottom one to me that I won't even guess. |

| I concur on the "Florida Sieboldii" ..could the second one be "Etoile Violette"?..Jeanne |

I was thinking 'Etoile Violette' before I read Jeanne's post. However, there are a ton of purple Clemmies. |

Actually I think the first one is Florida Viennetta - Just my opinion. This is the best picture I could find of Viennetta - you have to scroll down there - http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/clematis/msg1115124927798.html |

I also think it's the Florida Viennetta. A couple people ID'd it as Florida Sieboldii in the plant ID forum but this flower is definitely a cornflower blue and white. Is it hardy in zone 7a? Do I have to prune it and if so when? Thanks, Karyn |

Hi Karyn, My VIENNETTA died after that crazy winter we had, but it was potted. Probably, it will do fine in the ground with some protection (mulch). Prune both of your Clemmies after blooming and fertilize with rose fertilizer at the same time, you will get second blooming in our climate. I would also hard prune them next spring to stimulate branching and root developing. I am growing about 40 Clematis now (some of them in pots you gave me :-), thanks!). What I learned: Our summer sun is pretty harsh for Clematis, so plant them where they will be protected from afternoon sun, east exposure works very well. Your purple Clemmie might also fade badly on full sun. By pruning down to one third after blooming we can get up to 3 blooming periods in our zone. Good luck with them! Alina. |
