Prune happy

One of my Clematis - Jackamanni - I may have went alittle nuts pruning back... It was starting to get woody on the bottom so I cut it right back about 5 inches from the ground... anyways today I had a look at it and there is very small growth coming from the ground but the woody part was obviously dead looking - so I cut that part back again.... I just hope I didnt kill the poor thing... I was considering going out and buying another one but I just hope it will be alright... Does anyone know if jackamanni is reasonably hardy and do you think I should be ok? Can it take that kind of pruning and recover....???
