Clematis leaves are chartreuse

My clematis (Nelly M) is planted in improved garden soil with lots of compost mixed in. Eastern exposure. Roots shaded by bushes and under layer of shredded bark mulch. Watered nearly every day when it's hot and other plants are seen drooping. Organic fertilizer added to soil (Plant-tone). Alfalfa pellets dissolved and mixed with soil around roots. The leaves on my Nelly are a sort of chartreuse color, with a few of the leaves showing brown veins. This can't be normal. No other signs of any disease, and plant is blooming with many more buds yet to open. What's with my Nelly?
