It's important to remember that clematis vines take time to establish :-) There is a saying applied to a number of garden plants but particularly applicable to clems - the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap! Don't expect too much too soon.....otherwise your clematis looks fine. Jackmanii is a very vigorous vine. Even with routine hard pruning each season, I'd expect it to grow onto the overhead support in time.

It would appear the top growth has stopped because the growth shoots have been cut off - very evident in the last pic. Is this something you did? Could also be some sort of insect/creature damage.

I've been dead heading them when the petals start to fall off the flower. That's what you see in the last picture. Should I not be doing this?

Is your photo true to the color of the flower? Jackmanni is dark purple. The picture looks magenta/fuchsia to me....

Yes it's pretty darn close to the true color. It could be something different. I got it at K-mart so maybe they're not very good at labeling their plants properly. Can you possibly tell me what group the magenta/fuchsia is so I know the trimming requirements and such?

In your zone I'd prune it as a type III no matter what it is.
