Give it more time. It is common for baby Clematis to disappear when planted. It is not necessarily dead.

I agree, wait a little. Sometimes, Clematis take extra time to get going.

Mine bloomed ok the first year, but I moved it and it did nothing last year. This year it put up one stragly stem but has not bloomed yet. Fed it and hope that it is growing good roots for next year.

I don't remember offhand how the color compares with Willy, but that was one growing machine. I had left it in a sunken gallon pot from 08 to last Fall, when I knew it had to go into the ground. But when I dug up the pot, there were so many roots and stems I could divide it (carefully). Both pieces have started blooming at least a week ago.

Thanks, all. I just love my clematis, but they're so variable. Some take off like they're on steroids, others languish and still others die in multiples. And it isn't the same ones that always do well or ill for everyone. For me, Josephine grows like a weed, but I've lost at least 3 HF Youngs. Still, I don't usually give up on a clem until a couple of years pass with no sign of it. I've been surprised too many times. I guess I'm feeling pessimistic because so many of my Chalk Hill purchases don't seem to have made it, and they were mostly really unusual. I've given Pink Flamingo some alfalfa pellets and I'll wait, hope, and water.
