Help with Clematis

Hello. Last year when I first moved into our house I inherited a clematis by our front pole light. The bad part is I didn't realize it until after I chopped it off.

Fortunately it appears to be coming back strong this year. So we purchased a second clematis a couple weeks ago at Menards and planted it on the other side of the pole hoping that they both will climb the pole and produce different color flowers.

My question is - how do I train it to climb the pole?

Clematis need something thin to cling to. Some people wrap poles with chicken wire, fencing or nylon netting or place a trellis next to the pole. It would be helpful to know which clematis you have there.

You will need to wrap the pole with a type of fence material. 2x4 wire or chicken wire works great. The wire will need to be loose so the vine can wrap around and through the wire. Or you can use a fan trellis at the pole for the vine to climb.

I would recommend a circle 2 x 4 wire livestock fence at least four inches off the pole.
