Transplanting clemantis late spring

I have 3 year old vines that need to be moved or lost to a construction project. It is late spring and I have a ton of growth, should I trim them back and take as big a root ball as possible? Also I am unable to replant for a couple of months. Will they survive in large pots? Thanks.

I have dug up and potted several due to construction and they've been fine. I did cut them back. I have some that have been shoved in pots for six months now. I just keep cutting them back.
