Clematis Outgrowing the Obleisk it's On

I have a Henryi clematis planted in the middle of a perennial bed on an obleisk, last year it seems to grow very nicely on it but this year it's outgrowing it by almost 12"s so far.

Next year, I plan on buying something larger but as far as this year goes, does anyone have any ideas what I can do? The leaves on the obleisk are large but the leaves that are growing up into the air are all very small, is this because it's not clinging to something? My husband tells me to cut it but I don't think that's the right thing to do.

Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated!

Linda
