I looked it up on Clematis on the Web, which I recommend to everyone because it's a wonderful resource, and COTW had a link to the International Clematis Society article about this plant. I don't grow it myself, but I guess its color varies a lot, so that's probably what you have. COTW says it's a group 2 for pruning.

Thanks for the info. That is a great resource. I have it in an area with afternoon shade. That might explain the color.
