Dead clematis. Why?

This spring I bought a lot of clematis. Many of them have died. Looked like wilt. I noticed a trend though. I planted them in 4 types of situations. 1 - along a 17 foot trellis, each 2 feet apart from other established clematis. 2 - by themselves, without any other clems around. 3 - growing up a teepee type trellis where another clem and a rose were already there. 4 - into fruit trees where another clem was already there. Almost ALL of the clems planted within 2 feet of another, more mature clem, has died! When 2 babies were planted close, they are still alive! But all babies next to a grown one is gone. Many grew to 5 feet before croaking. What gives?

If you just planted them it is too soon to think they are dead.

Were they tiny pots?

Do you know their names?

Did you plant them deeper than they were in the pots?

Wilt isn't fatal. They will be back, especially if they were planted deeper.

They were planted deeper. There were 39 total and the ones that look dead account for at least a third so I figured too many to list. Would the mature ones GIVE them wilt?

No, it is not contagious. It is usually the result of young plants outgrowing their root systems and then they collapse.
They usually will survive it and outgrow it.

Type IIs are the ones that do this.

Cut anything off that looks dead or wilted and keep them watered and they should grow again.
