montana freda, did it make it through the winter?

last spring I bought a montana freda which is supposed to be smaller and more manageable than the other montanas and to be brighter and darker pink. I can't wait to see the flowers! End of summer (2009) it had grown four vines to a height of 2 meters (around 6 feet, I think?). I was really looking forward to see it blooming this spring.

We had an unusually cold winter and it appears that my montana might not have made it. At least, all I have now is four brown vines, no leaves, no flowers.

How will I know if it's dead? And what do you suggest I do? Is it a bad idea to prune it to the ground?
