Clematis Vyvyan Penell

Hello Everyone,

Although I've been gardening for 40 years, I've had only average luck with clematis. I don't know enough to be really skilled at growing them.

Last year I bought a Vyvyan Penell and planted it in a very large and very deep pot with a soil mix that I checked out with you folks beforehand. I tried to keep the roots in shade and the top in the sun.

This year, it emerged like dynamite, sending up 4 healthy leaders. After they were about 4 feet long, 3 of them dried and turned brown up all on the same day. The remaining leader looks healthy, has lots of leaves, but has not got any longer, nor has it produced any buds.

Perhaps someone here can tell me what to do to bring this plant into prime condition. Right now it is still in the pot, roots are shaded, and the top gets about a half day of sun about 10 am to 3 pm. I added a little bit of composted manure as a top dressing about 3 weeks ago after the 3 leaders dried up.

All comments will be appreciated.

Lainey
