What level of pH is best for clematis? Lime question also.

I'm finishing up some new beds and will test the soil before any new clematis get plant later this summer.

Since I've already got a problem with one clematis that has been here for years, I want to avoid more issues.

I know they say clematis like alkaline soil but what pH level is best? Does it matter what type the clematis is?

I also read somewhere, can't remember what website, they recommended putting a dusting of lime on the soil, water it in and it helps the clematis get nutrients from the soil. Fact or Fiction?
