clematis need at least 6 hours of sun to bloom well. I would reconsider and get a shade loving plant instead.

But wait! Aren't there some clems that can take shade? I'm still inexperienced, but my Hagley Hybrid blooms very well with only a couple of hours of morning sun -- and I've seen descriptions of several others that can tolerate or even need shade. One hour of diffused light isn't much, but I wonder if it's at least worth a try. For example, here are some from Silver Star Vinery that are mentioned for shade or semi-shade: Claire de Lune, Bees' Jubilee, Lemon Chiffon, Louise Rowe, Twilight, and Yukikomachi. In Clematis on the Web I've also seen Caroline -- which is gorgeous but perhaps unavailable -- mentioned for shade.

Hardened clem addicts, please correct me where I'm wrong. I just would hate to see anyone wanting a clematis, even to give as a gift, be unnecessarily discouraged. Maybe Kris's friend could shine a Gro-Light on his vine from the inside...?

Many of mine don't get six hours of sun. Many of the pinks like Nelly Moser fade badly in full sun and look much nicer in partial sun.

Wouldn't hurt to try.

Donahues also recommends Silver Moon for full shade to part shade. I can comment so far (because I just planted it last year) that on the north side of my shed it is full of buds. At most it gets diffused light & is shaded out by other plantings near by (conifers, which shades all year). I think that is a pretty good sign to what it's capable of in shade.
