It will be fine. Cutting back a small clematis, regardless of its official pruning type, makes the clematis grow more stems and it becomes a bushier plant.

Yes, it will live. You did the correct thing, especially if you also planted it deep....

Yes, I did plant it deep. Of course, I have no patience for waiting to see some growth, even though I know that the first year they sleep, there has been no growth showing yet. I suspect it's probably that the soil here is still a little too cool yet.
