I don't know what one it is but I'm sure it is a type III which should be hard pruned every year in early spring or late winter. Type III's bloom on new wood and the bare legs and blooms all clustered at the top is what will continue to happen if you don't prune it.

Personally, I would prune it to the ground and fertilize it and keep it watered but many would not prune so drastically.

If that freaks you out you could prune one of the vines to the ground and leave the other one longer.

Thank you. I did prune it in March/April but not to the ground. Maybe I didn't prune it enough. I think I like the option of pruning one vine and leaving the other alone. Then next year I will prune the other one low after blooming.

It should sprout out multiple vines from the crown. I pinch mine too as they sprout to get even more vines because the more stems/vines the more flowers.

Ideally, Type IIIs should be pruned before blooming and then you can prune them again after to get a second flush.

Definitely a pruning group 3 as they bloom on the new vines growing during the season and not on the old vines from previous years...Looks like Clematis "Etoile Violette" to me...Jeanne
