Five years old and never pruned - to late?

I put in a number of Clematis when I started the beds in my home about 5 years ago. I have no idea what they are, but I am in zone 4 and they are full of buds already (and last frost date is next week) They do sprout new shoots off the old cane, but the blooms are always from the new shoots. So I am assuming that that narrows down the possibilities of what they might be.(?)

I have never pruned them - I'm afraid I didnt know I was supposed to. I am growing them on a fence and trying to grow them over an arched trellis. They are pretty spindly and rarely shoot up new sprouts from the ground.

Is it to late to prune them at all? or should I cut them all down to 18" after most of the blooms have come and gone? Or should I wait until late fall and prune them back then?

Any advice would be appreciated - Thanks
