Planting a clematis near a small tree roots ?

I decided to plant the Roguchi I got a couple weeks ago. I finally found a spot that was perfect but when I started to dig I could see roots near the surface that are from a small flowering tree. I put down my shovel and thought I would see what the experts tell me. I know some of you plant clematis and rose bushes together but maybe a small tree is too much competition.

After thinking this over I guess I have decided to pick a better place to plant Roguchi as I want it to have a good start.
