The first blooms on baby/newly planted clematis can be off-colour...smaller in size and even look distorted..so wait till next year to access if you truly have the clematis you desired...Jeanne

Jeanne is right. It is a common occurrence for first flowers especially on baby/new Clematis to be off.

pianolady, you are in 4b & growing it! It looks great too! I just planted 1 last year & was a little nervous about it thriving here.

lilydude, mine being so new & little I did get only 1 flower & it looks like pianolady's. Did you have any weird temp changes while it was in bud? A lot of people all over these boards are experiencing weird things in their plants due to how strange the spring weather was for them, most notably in the SE.
