transplant grp 3's now -

I have some group 3 clematis I need to move. They have been in the ground 4 years. Still very tender and brittle, and about 2.5-3 feet tall. Please advise me how to move with least trauma. If I do it right, is it possible I'll still get bloom. (the growing season is really just starting up here in MA, despite record warm and cold weather)

next question: I'm taking this opportunity to plant them near and train them up a cotinus, a crab apple and a double file or Chicago Lustre viburnum. Ground is rooty under crab- do I hack out roots and make a big pocket of soil? Or do I just plant far enough away from the tree and roots so there's adequate soil?

Tricks for planting clems where roots offer some competition?

Thanks.

Marie
