clematis roots are golden colored and they have opposite leaf arrangement. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the link. The leaves there are wider than mine, and it has taken off vining right away after the tiniest stage. That link also shows the typical irregular leaf form of some, like a little hump in it.

I suppose different varieties can vary, but I'm thinking this is something else then. Any idea what it is? Weed or some flower?

If my little roots were golden, I think I would have noticed; they were white.

That is Rudbeckia you are growing. The foliage on Rudbeckia is hairy.

You think? Wonder how it got there as the only two I have (apart from some newly planted ones) are way in the back. I have another oddball I'm afraid to pull and normally would ask on the perennials forum, I guess.

I guess I'm going to just watch those in that spot and pots and see what they do. If they show any sign of being a weed and going to seed, I'll get rid of them.

Looks like Echinacae to me but Rudbeckia and Echinacea are very similar when not in flower.

The echinacea is right near there, so that makes sense. I'll compare the seedlings to that. Working with them, I didn't notice any fuzziness on the leaves, veined but fairly smooth, unlike the large rudbeckias I have.
