SAC - proper root coverage?

So I planted my first clematis. I went with C. paniculata only because I needed something that grew in this horrid soil and tolerated some shade. And because it's a fast grower, I have a huge area for it to cover. Only adjacent plant is my mom's burning bush about 5 foot away. We'll see what happens.

But my question is... I read that the roots need to stay cool. I decided to go with the rock idea, but can use mulch (store-bought pine mulch) instead if needed.

Upon looking at the link below, do I need a wider rock area to cover the root base? Or would mulch be better?

Thanks for any and all input!
